A few useful answers.
What happens to a transparent background?
JPEG cannot store transparency. Transparent areas are filled with the background color you select; white is the default.
Will the JPG always be smaller?
No. Photographs often compress well as JPEG, but flat graphics and text can become larger or show visible artifacts. Check the measured output size.
Does conversion reduce quality?
JPEG encoding is lossy. Fine edges and small text can lose detail. Use a higher quality setting or keep PNG when crisp graphics matter.
